I am Phil Hargreaves, an artist living and working in the East riding of Yorkshire.

As a student, I spent a term at the University of Aix-Marseille, living in Aix-en-Provence, and whilst there I visited Cezanne’s studio and followed his footsteps towards the Montagne Sainte Victoire. That was the start of my lifelong interest in art. I have been painting ever since and my current work is concentrated on the move from impressionistic landscapes towards abstraction and all points in between.

In truth, abstraction is all around us in the natural world and in our everyday lives. Sometimes, indeed, in a rather contradictory way, an abstract can actually turn out to be representational.

Recent work has concentrated on two main areas – Dalby Forest and Hornsea beach. I am also interested in collage, either in conjunction with acrylics or on its own, often with a political or environmental message. Depending on the subject matter, my aim is to make people smile, to stimulate reflexion and to help people appreciate the beauty that is all around them.
